The Crescent Curse
In 1991 — long after the Mikaelsons had left the city — Marcel Gerard had the Crescent pack cursed: the spell cast by the witch Brynne Deveraux, who was unknowingly possessed by Céleste Dubois. Locked in wolf form, with one night a month as humans at the full moon, an exact inversion of what they were. It is broken twenty-one years later.

- Hayley's family — which means the boy Klaus raised cursed the pack of the woman who would later have Klaus's child, two years after she was born.
- The curse was cast in 1991 by Brynne Deveraux while possessed by Céleste Dubois, on Marcel's orders. Wolf form permanently; human for one night at the full moon — the exact reverse of what a werewolf is.
- Hayley's parents were killed and she was raised outside the pack entirely, which is why she has no idea what she is when the story starts.
- Jackson Kenner, the pack's rightful alpha, marries Hayley in a ritual that lets the whole pack turn at will. Klaus permits it and then never stops resenting it. Tristan de Martel rips Jackson's heart out in front of her.
