Wolves & Hybrids
Niklaus Mikaelson
Klaus · the Original Hybrid
Esther's son by the werewolf Ansel, raised by a father who despised him and never told him why. His first kill woke his wolf side; his mother bound it to keep Mikael from killing him; he spent a thousand years undoing that binding and inventing a fake curse to make two entire species help him look for the pieces. He killed his mother, blamed his father, and kept his siblings in boxes for centuries at a time as a form of love.
He broke the curse in 2010 and discovered it had bought him nothing — the hybrids he wanted needed a doppelgänger's blood, and the doppelgänger had survived. He went to New Orleans, found out he was going to be a father, and spent seven years being a worse and then a better one. He dies in 2018 by white oak, to take a thousand-year-old darkness out of his daughter, and his last words in the franchise are a recorded message, delivered ten years late, telling her she is his peace.
Details
- His blood is the only cure for a werewolf bite, which makes him the most useful person alive to have owed you a favour.
- His interest in Caroline Forbes runs from 2011 to the last season of The Originals and is the franchise's most-discussed unresolved thread.
- He raised Marcel Gerard as a son, abandoned him, and spent a century pretending it was the other way round.
- He funded the Salvatore School. Posthumously, his money is what makes Legacies possible.
