A warrior of the Old World who despised weakness and made that his children's entire childhood. When Esther's spell made them all vampires, Mikael became the thing that hunts them: he feeds on other vampires rather than on people, and he chased his own children across nine centuries and three continents.
He learned that Niklaus was not his son, killed Ansel, his family and half the village's wolves in a night, and spent the next thousand years telling Klaus exactly what he thought of him. Klaus finally kills him with white oak in Mystic Falls in 2011. He is brought back once afterwards, by Davina in New Orleans, and is in both cities the only person Klaus is genuinely afraid of.

- He kept one white oak stake back after Esther burned the tree — the only weapon that could kill his own children.
- He can be summoned and pinned by a witch, which is how Klaus eventually manages it.
- Rebekah summoned him to New Orleans in 1919 hoping he would kill Klaus. He nearly killed everyone.
