- Tyler Lockwood triggers his by a car accident. Jules, Mason, Hayley — all of them have a body somewhere behind them.
- Werewolf venom is lethal to vampires within roughly a day. Klaus's blood is the antidote, and he trades it like currency.
- Mason Lockwood triggers his by a fight that ends in a death; Tyler triggers his in a car accident he causes. Both are unaware the gene exists until it activates.
