The Wolves Next Door
Werewolves are the older species. They existed long before Esther's spell, turning involuntarily and agonisingly on the full moon, and they are the reason the Mikaelsons hid one night a month. Vampires were, from day one, built partly as a defence against them.
Details
- The werewolf gene passes by blood but stays dormant until the carrier causes a human death. This single rule kills more characters than any villain in the franchise.
- A werewolf bite is fatal to a vampire. Klaus's hybrid blood is the only cure — the most valuable leverage anyone in this world can hold.
- Before the Original vampires, werewolves were the apex predator of the supernatural world and knew it.
- Post-vampire, wolves are systematically hunted, cursed and marginalised — in Mystic Falls by the Lockwoods' own secrecy, in New Orleans by Klaus's decree.
- A hybrid — half vampire, half wolf — turns at will and without pain, which is why Klaus's hybrids defect the second they are freed from his sire bond.
