Esther had an affair with a man from the wolf village. Niklaus is his son, and neither of them knew it until Klaus's first kill woke his wolf side. Mikael's response was to kill Ansel, his family and half the village's wolves in a night — and to spend the next thousand years reminding Klaus what he was.
