Wolves & Hybrids · Era II, The Mikaelsons
The Hybrid Curse
When Klaus's first kill triggered his wolf, Esther bound it — using Tatia's blood and the moonstone — so he could never be both. She did it to keep Mikael from killing him. Klaus spent a thousand years working to undo it, and the first two seasons of The Vampire Diaries are really about nothing else.
Details
- Undoing it requires the moonstone, a Petrova doppelgänger, a werewolf and a vampire, sacrificed on a full moon by a witch.
- The moonstone is the seal. It is also the single most passed-around object in television, changing hands about nine times in two seasons.
- Klaus's plan was never really power. It was to make more of himself, so he would not be the only one.
- The moonstone was created to seal it and is passed between Katherine, Mason, Tyler, Damon, Bonnie and Klaus over two seasons.
- Klaus does not want the curse broken for strength. He wants it broken so he can sire hybrids and never be alone again — which the show says out loud, repeatedly.
- The witch who performs the sacrifice is Greta Martin, daughter of the witch Jonas Martin, who chose Klaus's side against her own family. Damon kills her in the chaos afterwards.
