Breaking the Curse
Klaus's ritual: drain a werewolf, a vampire and the doppelgänger on a full moon with the moonstone. He uses Jules, Jenna Sommers — turned specifically for the purpose — and Elena. It works. He becomes the Original hybrid. Then he discovers he cannot make more, because the doppelgänger did not stay dead.

- Elena survives because John Gilbert trades his life for hers through a Bennett spell.
- She comes back human — no vampire blood involved. The death that actually turns her is two seasons later, when Meredith Fell heals her with Damon's blood before the second Wickery Bridge crash.
- Klaus's hybrids need doppelgänger blood to survive the turn, which is why Elena's continued existence remains a weekly emergency.
- Jenna Sommers is turned by Klaus specifically so she can be the vampire in the ritual. She dies within a day of turning.
- John Gilbert takes Elena's death onto himself through a Bennett spell — the one genuinely selfless thing he ever does.
- Klaus's hybrids fail because the doppelgänger lived. He needs Elena's blood to make more, which is why she is a permanent target afterwards.
