The Mystic Falls Codex

Two thousand years of one story, Silas to the Salvatore School.

Vampires · Era II, The Mikaelsons

The Original Vampires

c. 1000 →

Mikael, Finn, Elijah, Niklaus, Kol and Rebekah — six of them; Esther cast the spell and stayed a witch. The first vampires, and the source of every vampire who has ever existed. Nothing kills them but white oak; a silver dagger dipped in white oak ash merely puts them to sleep, which is how Klaus keeps his siblings for centuries at a time.

Details

  • "Always and forever" is Elijah's vow and the family's central promise — made, broken and re-made roughly once a season.
  • Finn spent nine hundred years daggered. Kol spent a century. Rebekah lost decades. Klaus considers this a form of love, which is the show's most honest and most disturbing idea.
  • Finn is the eldest surviving son and the only one who considers vampirism an abomination from the first day. He is daggered for 900 years and killed within months of waking.
  • Kol is a witch-turned-vampire and the family's most reckless. He hates witches, fears the cure, and is killed by Jeremy Gilbert in 2012 with white oak.
  • Rebekah wants a human life from the very first season she appears in and finally gets one, in New Orleans, roughly nine years of screen time later.
  • Elijah is the family's conscience and its most efficient killer, which is the joke the show never stops telling.
