Esther made her husband a vampire too, and he became the thing that hunts them. Mikael fed on vampires rather than people, chased his own children across nine centuries and three continents, and killed Klaus's wolf father, Klaus's hybrids, and eventually — briefly — Klaus.

- Klaus killed Esther after learning the truth about Ansel, and told his siblings Mikael did it. The lie held for a thousand years.
- Mikael can be summoned and staked, but he is the reason the family never stayed anywhere long enough to be happy.
- Mikael can be summoned by a witch and pinned by white oak, which is exactly how Klaus finally kills him in Mystic Falls in 2011.
- Davina brings him back once, in New Orleans, and he remains in both cities the only person Klaus is actually afraid of.
- He feeds on vampires, not humans, which makes him functionally a predator of his own children.
