They settled in what would eventually be Mystic Falls, Virginia, beside a community of people who became wolves at the full moon. For years the arrangement held perfectly well: the wolves changed, everyone else stayed indoors, and in the morning it was over.

- Ayana, the witch who guided them, is an ancestor of the Bennett line.
- The Mikaelsons and the Bennetts have therefore been in each other's business since before either had a surname worth mentioning.
- The village sits on what will become Mystic Falls. The Salvatore boarding house, the Lockwood cellar and the Wickery Bridge all stand on Mikaelson ground.
- Ayana's line, the wolves' line and the Mikaelson line all begin within a few miles of each other, which is why the franchise keeps coming back to one small town in Virginia.
