A witch and a warrior from the Old World. They lost a child to plague, and Esther's friend Ayana told them of a land across the sea where the people were healthy and strong. They took what family they had left and went. Esther is the most consequential person in the franchise and one of its worst mothers.

- Mikael is a warrior who despised weakness, and made that his children's entire childhood. Klaus got the worst of it.
- Esther's power is real and enormous — she remains a threat a thousand years later, twice, from beyond death.
- Esther is called the Original Witch. Her power is the largest single force in the franchise's history and everything catastrophic in it is downstream of a decision she made.
- She returns from death twice — once in season three of TVD and again in New Orleans — both times intending to undo her own spell by putting her children into new mortal bodies.
- Mikael's contempt for weakness was aimed hardest at Klaus, which was Esther's fault: she knew why Klaus was different and never told him.
