The youngest Mikaelson. He wanted to see the wolves change on a full moon, and Niklaus took him out to watch, and a wolf killed him. Esther refused to bury another child and went looking for a spell that would make the rest of her family impossible to kill.
Everything else in eleven seasons of television is downstream of that. Klaus has carried the blame for a thousand years, and it informs every cruelty he commits.
