The Mystic Falls Codex

Two thousand years of one story, Silas to the Salvatore School.

Witches & Magic · Era I, The First Immortals

The Travelers

c. 100 BC →

The coven Silas and Qetsiyah both came from, cursed by the wider witch community after her immortality spell: they can never settle. Any home they build turns to ruin, any community they form scatters. Two thousand years of wandering, all of it aimed at one goal — undo the curse, using the blood of the doppelgängers her spell created.

Details

  • Their magic is heresy to Spirit witches. They draw on the collective will of the Travelers, not on nature or ancestors.
  • They possess bodies rather than occupy them, passing consciousness down through generations.
  • Their victory in 2014 unmakes every kind of magic except their own inside Mystic Falls. Damon and Elena kill Markos by blowing up the Grill; the anti-magic border outlives them and is only lifted months later, when Kai Parker siphons the spell out of the ground.
  • They pass their consciousness into new bodies rather than reincarnate; a Traveler's "death" is a change of address.
  • Sheriff Forbes, Stefan, Elena and half of Mystic Falls are used as vessels or hosts at some point in season five.
  • Their curse means every Traveler settlement fails, which has kept them permanently nomadic and permanently furious.
