Nature's response to two people cheating death: it keeps reprinting their faces. Silas and Amara each got a recurring mortal shadow, born again every few centuries. It matters because doppelgänger blood is the only fuel that will run an Original-tier spell.

- Amara's line runs Amara → Tatia → Katerina Petrova → Elena Gilbert.
- Silas's line runs through Stefan Salvatore to Tom Avery — which is why Silas can walk around wearing Stefan's face and nobody notices for weeks.
- Klaus needs a Petrova twice over: Tatia's blood bound his curse, Elena's blood broke it.
- The line skips generations and continents. Katherine is Bulgarian, Elena's people are American, and Tatia lived a thousand years before either.
- Travelers hunt doppelgängers specifically because the blood of two matching shadows, spilled together, will break the curse laid on them.
- Tom Avery — the last-born Silas double, younger than Stefan — is a paramedic in Atlanta, killed by Enzo to keep the Travelers from using him.
