Born Katerina Petrova in Bulgaria in 1473, disgraced by a pregnancy, and thrown out by her father after her daughter was taken at birth. Within months she was in England being courted by a charming lord who intended to drain her on an altar. She found out, stole the moonstone, and ran — and then did the one thing that made her permanently worthless to Klaus: she fed on a vampire's blood and hanged herself, because the ritual requires a human.
Klaus slaughtered her entire family for it. She ran for five hundred years, turned up in Mystic Falls in 1864 to compel two brothers into loving her, and surfaced again in 2009 to play every side of every conflict. She was forced to take the cure in 2013, aged five centuries in weeks once Silas drained it out of her, refused her daughter's body and had a Traveler move her into Elena's instead, died, and came back in 2017 as the ruler of Hell.
Details
- Her daughter Nadia found her after five hundred years and died of a werewolf bite within a season of the reunion.
- Rose and Trevor helped her escape in 1492 — Rose's blood is what turned her — and both paid for it centuries later: Trevor with his head, Rose with a wolf bite.
- She is never once stupid, which makes her the best-constructed character in the show.
- She dies in a burning building for the second time in the series finale. The show knows exactly what it is doing.
