Origins & Immortals · Era V, The Doppelgänger War
The Cure, Taken
Elena takes the cure and is human again — and then Kai's linking spell ties her life to Bonnie's: Elena sleeps until Bonnie dies. It costs the show its lead for two seasons, and costs Damon a wait he ultimately does not have to finish.
Details
- Bonnie is handed the choice between her own life and her best friend's consciousness, again, which is the fourth time.
- The cure survives in Elena's blood, which is what makes the finale possible.
- Kai's linking spell is cast at Jo and Alaric's wedding, immediately after he murders the bride.
- Damon chooses to give Elena the cure knowing it means losing her for Bonnie's whole life, which the show treats as his first genuinely unselfish act.
