Katherine’s Return
She was never in the tomb. Katherine surfaces in 2009, plays every side of every conflict, is eventually forced to take the cure, ages five hundred years in weeks, possesses her own daughter's body to survive it, dies again, and comes back in 2017 as the queen of Hell. She structurally refuses to be finished.

- She is the best-constructed character in the show and the only one who is never once stupid.
- She takes the cure by force in 2013, starts ageing five centuries in weeks once Silas drains it back out of her, and passes her consciousness into Elena's body to escape dying.
- Nadia Petrova finds her after five hundred years and dies of a werewolf bite within a season of the reunion.
- In 2017 she returns from Hell as its ruler, with a plan to burn Mystic Falls, and is left standing in the hellfire.
