Vampires · Era IV, Mystic Falls, 1864
The Ripper
Stefan's condition. Human blood turns him into a compulsive, escalating killer who dismembers his victims and then, in remorse, reassembles them. It recurs across the entire series, and it is why he treats his own humanity switch like a loaded weapon he is holding for someone else.
Details
- Lily was a ripper. It runs in the family, which is either genetics or the show's idea of one.
- Klaus deliberately weaponises Stefan's version twice — in Chicago in the 1920s, and again in 2011 when he compels it back on.
- The pattern is specific: binge, dismember, then reassemble the body out of guilt. The show shows the aftermath rather than the act, and it is worse for it.
- Lexi spent decades pulling Stefan back from it and is killed by Damon within four episodes of appearing.
- Klaus compels Stefan's humanity off in 2011 and keeps him as a companion, which is the most intimate and most horrifying thing Klaus does to anyone.
