- Her sons spend 150 years grieving a woman who chose someone else and then came back to say so.
- Damon's entire personality gets a retroactive explanation in about six episodes.
- Lily was turned in Europe and abandoned her sons rather than come home as a monster. She calls the Heretics her real family in front of both of them.
- Julian, the man she loved, murdered Valerie's unborn child — Stefan's — and Lily refused to believe it for over a century.
- She dies in 2016 in a way that finally forces Damon and Stefan to be brothers again, which is what she was for structurally.
