Lily's siphoner-vampire family takes Mystic Falls, drives the population out and forces the whole cast into a three-year time jump. The town is literally evacuated. It is the strangest structural decision the show ever makes and it works better than it has any right to.

- Alaric returns from the Armory with a wife, twins-in-progress and a research library.
- Enzo, Bonnie, Caroline and Alaric's arcs all reset here into the shape that carries them into Legacies.
- Mystic Falls is evacuated and stays empty for three years. The show cuts forward and shows you the wreckage before explaining it.
- Caroline carries Alaric and Jo's twins after Jo is killed at their wedding by Kai.
- Julian, Lily's old love, arrives from the prison world and is the arc's actual villain — Lily's blindness about him is the tragedy.
