The hunter's map, Professor Shane, an island with a tomb under it, and the slow realisation that the cure comes attached to a two-thousand-year-old immortal who has been feeding Bonnie instructions in the shape of her dead grandmother. Katherine takes the cure. Silas gets loose.

- Every faction wants it for a different reason: Klaus to make Elena human again for hybrid blood, Elijah for Katherine, Damon and Stefan for Elena, Silas to die.
- Professor Atticus Shane engineers the whole expedition — twelve human sacrifices, twelve vampires, twelve hybrids — to raise Silas and get his wife back.
- Silas appears to Bonnie as Grams for most of a season, which is a genuinely cruel piece of manipulation.
- Jeremy Gilbert is killed by Silas on the island. Bonnie's attempt to bring him back is what starts breaking the Other Side.
